About Australia Day

Australia Day is the national day of Australia, held on 26 January, in the middle of the summer holidays.

Across the country, councils hold citizenship ceremonies to welcome new Australians, communities give out Australian of the Year and local awards, and families gather for barbecues, beach days, cricket in the backyard and fireworks.

The date marks the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people it is a day of sorrow and remembrance, and many Australians use the day to reflect, to learn and to honour the world's oldest continuing cultures as well as to celebrate the country they share.

How people celebrate Australia Day

  • Citizenship ceremonies

How to wish well

  • Keep wishes warm and inclusive: about the land, the people and the welcome Australia gives.
  • Be mindful that the day is painful for many First Nations people; a respectful message that acknowledges all who call Australia home is kind.
  • A message to a new citizen on their ceremony day is a lovely gesture.
