About Aadi Pooram
Aadi Pooram falls on the Pooram star in the Tamil month of Aadi, in July or August. It is celebrated as the birth day of Andal, the poet-saint who wrote the Thiruppavai, and as a festival of the Goddess.
At Srivilliputhur, Andal's birthplace, a grand chariot festival is held. In Amman and Shiva temples, the Goddess is offered glass bangles in a valaikappu ceremony, like the baby shower given to mothers-to-be, and the bangles are later given to devotees as blessings.
Women pray for the well-being of their families, and many pray for a safe pregnancy or for children.
