About Aadi Perukku
Aadi Perukku is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi, in late July or early August, when monsoon rains fill the rivers. Perukku means rising or overflowing.
Families gather on the banks of the Kaveri and other rivers and lakes to thank the waters that feed the fields. They offer flowers, turmeric and lamps, and share five or more kinds of mixed rice such as lemon, coconut, tamarind and curd rice.
Newly married couples are blessed by the river, and many women change their sacred thread. Aadi 18 is also thought a lucky day to begin new things. The biggest gatherings are along the Kaveri at places like Srirangam, Thiruvaiyaru and Mettur.
