About Aadi Amavasai

Aadi Amavasai is the new moon day of the Tamil month of Aadi, in July or August. It is one of the most important days of the year to remember and honour one's ancestors.

Families offer tharpanam, prayers with sesame seeds and water, for their departed forefathers, often at the sea or a river. Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Thiruvaiyaru and other sacred shores see huge gatherings at dawn.

Many people fast, feed the poor and crows, and visit temples. It is a quiet, respectful day of gratitude rather than celebration.

How people celebrate Aadi Amavasai

  • Tharpanam for ancestors
  • Holy dips at the sea and rivers
  • Feeding crows and the needy
  • Fasting until the rituals are done
  • Temple visits

How to wish well

  • This is a day of remembrance: send blessings and thoughtful words, not "Happy Aadi Amavasai".
  • Avoid jokes and party wishes; a short line of gratitude to elders is best.
  • "Aadi Amavasai blessings" or "ஆடி அமாவாசை ஆசிகள்" are respectful.
