About Tamil Nadu Day

Tamil Nadu Day celebrates the state of Tamil Nadu, its language and its people. Two dates are tied to it. On 1 November 1956 the Tamil-speaking regions were formed into Madras State when India's states were drawn by language. On 18 July 1967 the Assembly, led by Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai, passed the resolution to rename Madras State as Tamil Nadu; the new name came into use on 14 January 1969.

The state first marked 1 November as Tamil Nadu Day in 2019. From 2022 the day moved to 18 July, and 1 November was kept as a day to honour those who struggled for the state's borders. In July 2026 the state announced that both days would be celebrated.

Schools, colleges and Tamil groups hold programmes of Tamil songs, poetry, Bharatanatyam, silambam and quizzes on the state's history. Tamils around the world, from Singapore and Malaysia to Canada and the UK, share wishes in their mother tongue.
