How to make an app icon

  1. Pick a look

    Start from a named look such as Aurora glass, Clay 3D or Neon night, or open a design from the examples.

  2. Add your mark

    Choose a symbol, type one to three letters, or add your own logo. Set its colour, size and effects.

  3. Check it and download

    See it on an iPhone, an Android phone, a Mac dock and at small sizes, then download every size in one zip.

Good to know

  • Keep one simple shape. If you can still tell what it is at 29 px in Small sizes, it works on every phone.
  • Leave the corners alone: phones and stores round them. Keep the mark inside the middle two thirds so Android masks never cut it.
  • Use the same colour as your app's main button, so the icon and the app feel like one.
  • The App Store icon cannot be see-through. The maker writes it without an alpha channel, as the store needs.
  • Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y undo and redo, Ctrl+S downloads the zip. Your last design is kept in this browser.

Which sizes are in the zip?

iOS: an AppIcon.appiconset with one 1024 picture plus the dark and tinted looks for Xcode 14 and later, and a classic set with every size for older Xcode, and a 1024 App Store icon with no transparency. Android: ic_launcher and ic_launcher_round for every density, adaptive icon layers (foreground, background and themed) with ic_launcher.xml, and the 512 Play Store icon. macOS: AppIcon.icns and the iconset. Web: favicon.ico, PNG favicons, the apple touch icon and a manifest. Plus the icon as SVG.

Does current Xcode still need every size?

No. Since Xcode 14 one 1024 by 1024 picture is enough for every iPhone and iPad size; Xcode makes the rest when it builds. The zip has that single-size set, plus the classic set with every size for older projects.

Should I round the corners myself?

No. iOS, Android and the stores add the rounded shape themselves, so the store and Xcode files are full squares. The preview shows the rounded shape so you see the real look.

Why does the App Store icon have no transparency?

App Store Connect refuses an icon with an alpha channel, even a fully solid one. The maker writes the 1024 App Store and Xcode pictures as plain RGB PNG files, so they upload the first time.

What are the dark and tinted icons?

Since iOS 18 people can show home screen icons dark or tinted. The zip includes both looks, made from your design, and Xcode 16 picks them up from the same folder.

Is my logo uploaded anywhere?

No. The icon is drawn in your browser and the zip is made on this device. Your logo never leaves it.
