About Aoleang

Aoleang, also called Aoleang Monyu, is the biggest festival of the Konyak Nagas of Nagaland. It is held from 1 to 6 April every year, mainly in Mon district, when spring arrives and the seeds have been sown in the jhum fields.

Aoleang marks the start of the new year for the Konyaks. People pray for a good harvest, honour the land and remember their ancestors. Homes are cleaned, and food, rice beer and meat are made ready days before.

Each day has its own work and joy. There are feasts, songs and dances in traditional dress, with the deep beat of the great log drum. Families visit one another and share meals, and the villages are full of music.
