About Thalfavang Kut

Thalfavang Kut is a festival of the Mizo people of Mizoram, held in November. It marks the end of the long weeding of the jhum fields and the start of the harvest season. After months of hard work in the hills, families stop to rest, give thanks and enjoy the golden fields before the rice is cut.

Kut means festival, and Mizoram has three great ones: Chapchar Kut in spring, Mim Kut in autumn and Pawl Kut after the harvest. Thalfavang Kut joins them as the festival of the season between hard work and plenty.

The celebrations bring folk dances such as the Cheraw bamboo dance, traditional songs with drums, and old Mizo games. Stalls offer local food and crafts, and people dress in the woven puan and other traditional clothes.

Above all, Thalfavang Kut is about tlawmngaihna, the Mizo spirit of helping others without being asked. Neighbours who worked side by side in the fields now celebrate side by side.
