About Pawl Kut

Pawl Kut is the harvest festival of the Mizo people, held after the rice harvest, usually in December. It is a festival of thanks for the year's crops and of joy after months of hard work in the fields.

An old story tells of a village that suffered two years of famine and then had a rich harvest in the third year. The people thanked God with a great feast, and the feast became Pawl Kut.

The best-loved custom is Chawnghnawt. Mothers and children sit together on a platform and feed each other meat and eggs, a sweet sign of family love. There are feasts, songs, folk dances and games for two days or more.

Today Pawl Kut is kept in villages across Mizoram and in Aizawl with cultural programmes. It is especially a festival for children and families.
