About Mim Kut

Mim Kut is one of the three old festivals of the Mizo people, with Chapchar Kut and Pawl Kut. It comes after the maize harvest, usually in late August or September, and is a time to remember family members who have passed away.

In the old days families set aside the first maize and vegetables of the harvest for their departed loved ones, and kept a quiet time at home. The story of Tlingi and Ngama, two lovers parted by death, is linked with the festival.

Today Mim Kut is kept as a day of remembrance and Mizo heritage. The state holds a programme in Aizawl with talks, art and essays, and families share harvest food, visit graves and tell stories of those they miss.

It is a gentle festival, not a loud one. Wishes are about memory, love, gratitude for the harvest and comfort for those who are grieving.
