About Medaram Jatara

The Medaram Jatara, or Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, is held once every two years in the forest village of Medaram in Mulugu district, Telangana. It honours Sammakka and her daughter Saralamma, brave women of the Koya tribe who are remembered as goddesses.

The story goes back about 700 years. When a ruler's army demanded tax in a year of drought, Sammakka, Saralamma and their family stood up for their people. The Koya people believe Sammakka turned into a vermilion casket on the Chilakalagutta hill, and they have kept her memory ever since.

The jatara runs for four days in the month of Magha. On the first day Saralamma is brought from Kannepalli, on the second Sammakka is brought down from Chilakalagutta, on the third devotees make their offerings, and on the fourth the goddesses go back to the forest. Pilgrims bathe in the Jampanna Vagu stream and offer jaggery, which they call bangaram, or gold, often equal to their own weight.

It is one of the largest tribal gatherings in the world, with pilgrims from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and beyond. It is a state festival of Telangana.
