About Ker Puja

Ker Puja is a festival of Tripura that comes about two weeks after Kharchi Puja, in July or August. It honours Ker, the guardian god of the land, who protects the people from harm and keeps the state safe.

The word ker means a boundary. For the hours of the puja, a boundary is marked around the area of the temple in Old Agartala, and everyone inside keeps quiet. No one enters or leaves the area, no music is played, no fires or lights are lit, and people stay calm at home.

The rituals are led by the Chantai priests, the same priests who serve the Fourteen Gods. When the puja ends, life goes back to normal with the feeling that the land is safe for another year.

The festival began with the kings of Tripura and is still kept by the state, with a holiday in the area of the puja.
