About Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan, or Rakhi, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It falls on the full moon of the month of Shravan, in August.

A sister ties a rakhi, a decorated thread, on her brother's wrist, puts a tilak on his forehead and prays for his long life. The brother gives a gift and promises to look after her. Old stories tell of Draupadi binding Lord Krishna's cut finger with her saree and his promise to protect her, and of Queen Indrani tying a thread on Indra's wrist.

Today sisters also tie rakhis on cousins, on close friends who are like brothers, and on each other; many send rakhis by post to siblings in other cities and countries. The same full moon is Narali Purnima for the fishing communities of Maharashtra, Avani Avittam in the south and Jhulan Purnima in Bengal.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated across North and West India, in Nepal and Mauritius, and by Indian families everywhere.

How people celebrate Raksha Bandhan

  • Tying the rakhi on the brother's wrist
  • A thali with roli, rice, a diya and sweets
  • Tilak and aarti by the sister
  • Gifts and a promise from the brother
  • Rakhis sent by post to siblings far away
  • A family lunch with festive sweets

How to wish well

  • Send your wish in the morning, before the rakhi is tied, or call if you live far apart.
  • Wishes work both ways: sisters to brothers, brothers to sisters, and between sisters too.
  • Teasing about gifts is part of the fun between siblings; keep it kind.
  • For colleagues and customers, a short wish for a happy day with family is enough.
  • Rakhi brothers and sisters, friends who are like family, love a wish of their own.
