About Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Purab, marks the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, born in 1469 at Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib. It falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartik.

Guru Nanak taught that there is one God, that all people are equal, and that we should remember God, earn honestly and share with others. These three teachings, Naam Japna, Kirat Karni and Vand Chakna, guide Sikh life.

Two days before, gurdwaras begin an Akhand Path, an unbroken reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. Nagar Kirtan processions fill the streets, the day begins with prayers at dawn, and langar, the free community kitchen, serves everyone. Homes and gurdwaras are lit with lamps.
