Where it began
Tripura was ruled for centuries by the Manikya kings. After independence the kingdom joined India in October 1949.
In 1956 Tripura became a Union Territory. Under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act of 1971 it became a full state on 21 January 1972, together with Manipur and Meghalaya.
