Where it began
Telangana was part of the old Hyderabad State. In 1956 its Telugu-speaking areas were joined with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh.
Over the following decades, many people in the region asked for a state of their own, and a long movement grew with songs, gatherings and the support of people from all walks of life.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act was passed by Parliament in 2014, and Telangana was formed on 2 June 2014 as the 29th state of India at the time.
