About Sri Lanka Independence Day

Sri Lanka celebrates its Independence Day, also called National Day, on 4 February. On that day in 1948, the island, then called Ceylon, became independent.

The day begins with flag-raising and the national anthem, sung in Sinhala and Tamil, followed by a national parade and cultural performances of dance and drumming.

Schools, temples, churches, mosques and kovils hold prayers for the country, and families fly the lion flag at home and spend the holiday together.

Where it began

The island was ruled in turn by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. Leaders like D. S. Senanayake worked peacefully for self-rule.

On 4 February 1948 Ceylon became an independent dominion, and Senanayake became the first Prime Minister. In 1972 the country became a republic named Sri Lanka.
