- 9 August
- Independence, 1965
- National Day Parade since 1966
Where it began
Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963. On 9 August 1965, it separated and became a sovereign country, with Lee Kuan Yew as its first Prime Minister.
The young nation had few natural resources, and its people worked together to build homes, schools and industry. National Day celebrates that shared journey.
