About New Year

New Year's Day falls on 1 January, the first day of the Gregorian calendar. It is a public holiday in most countries of the world.

People see out the old year on New Year's Eve with family dinners, music and a countdown to midnight. Fireworks light up city skies as the clock strikes twelve.

On the day itself, families visit elders, share a special meal and send wishes to friends far away. Many people make a resolution, a small promise to themselves for the year ahead.

How people celebrate New Year

  • Countdown to midnight
  • Fireworks
  • Family dinner
  • New year resolutions
  • Calling elders
  • Visiting places of worship

How to wish well

  • Send wishes to elders first, ideally by a phone call on the morning of 1 January.
  • Midnight messages are welcome among friends; for colleagues and clients, send them in the morning.
  • For customers, keep it short and thank them for their trust in the past year.
  • Many cultures have their own new year too, such as Lunar New Year, Puthandu or Rosh Hashanah, so wish people on those days as well.
