Where it began
Brazil was a colony of Portugal for about three centuries. In 1808 the Portuguese royal family moved to Rio de Janeiro, and Brazil grew in importance.
When the king returned to Portugal, his son Pedro stayed as regent. On 7 September 1822, near the Ipiranga stream in Sao Paulo, Pedro declared Brazil independent. This moment is called the Cry of Ipiranga. He soon became Emperor Pedro I.
