About Anna Abhishekam

Anna Abhishekam falls on the full moon day of the Tamil month Aippasi, in October or November. On this day Lord Shiva is bathed in cooked rice in temples across Tamil Nadu.

The Shiva lingam is covered fully with fresh rice, often with vegetables and sweets around it. Each grain is said to hold the Lord, so seeing the lingam in rice is a special darshan. The grandest is at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, where a huge lingam is covered in rice.

After the puja the rice is shared as prasadam with devotees, and some of it is given to fish and birds, so that every living thing is fed. It is a day of thanks for food and a prayer that no one goes hungry.
