Where it began
In the years after independence, many people in the Telugu-speaking areas of the old Madras State asked for a state of their own, so that the language and its people could grow together.
Potti Sriramulu began a fast for a separate Andhra State in 1952 and died after many days of fasting. His sacrifice moved people deeply, and Andhra State was formed on 1 October 1953 with Kurnool as its capital.
Under the States Reorganisation Act, Andhra State and the Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad State were joined to form Andhra Pradesh on 1 November 1956, with Hyderabad as its capital.
