Convert an old Tamil Word file to Unicode, keeping the layout

Open the Word file (.docx) here. The converter reads the font of every part of the document: text in an old Tamil font such as Bamini, Vanavil, Stmzh or TAM becomes Unicode Tamil, and English in English fonts stays as it is. Bold, sizes, tables, headers and pictures are kept, and you download a new Word file.

You will see:

  • A Word file of letters, notices, question papers or reports typed in an old Tamil font
  • The file looks broken on a new computer or phone
  • You need the same file in Unicode for e-mail, the web or an office system

How to fix it

  1. Open the Word file

Use Open file and pick the .docx. For an old .doc file, open it in Word and save it as .docx first.

  2. Check what was found

The page lists the old fonts it found and converts each one. English fonts are left alone.

  3. Download the new file

Press Word to save the converted copy. Your original file is not changed.

Questions people ask

Does it keep my formatting?

Yes. Only the text and its font change. Bold, italics, sizes, colours, tables, headers, footers and pictures stay where they were.

My file has Tamil and English mixed. Is that a problem?

No. Each part is converted by its own font, so English words in Times New Roman or Arial are kept as English.

Which Unicode font will the new file use?

Latha by default, which comes with Windows. You can pick Nirmala UI, TAU-Marutham, Noto Sans Tamil or Arial Unicode MS before you download.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is opened and converted in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is my text or file uploaded?

No. Everything is converted in your browser on this device. Nothing you paste or open is sent to a server.
